Here is a brief, non-inclusive timeline of some of the deadliest attacks in Canada over the last 50 years:
1963-1970: The Front de Libération du Québec (FLQ) launch a wave of bombings at dozens of targets, culminating in the October Crisis of 1970, which led to the kidnappings of British Trade Commissioner James Cross and Quebec labor minister Pierre Laporte. Cross was freed after two months; Laporte was found murdered. There were a total of eight deaths in this period.
May 8, 1984: Three people are killed and 13 others were hurt at Quebec City's National Assembly by Cpl. Denis Lortie.
Sept. 3, 1984: Montreal's Central Station bombing: three tourists are killed when a bomb goes off at the train station. A former American military man was put on trial for the attack, but died midway through.
June 23, 1985: 329 people are killed in the Air India bombing, the worst terror attack ever involving Canadians. 329 people were on board, including 278 Canadians, when Flight 182 was brought down off the coast of Ireland.
Dec. 6, 1989: The Polytechnique massacre claims the lives of 14 women. The attacker, Marc Lépine, professed his hatred of "feminists" who he says "ruined his life" in a suicide note.
Aug. 24, 1992: Four Concordia University professors were shot to death by a disgruntled colleague, mechanical engineering professor Valery Fabrikant. Fabrikant was sentenced to life in prison and is eligible for parole in 2017.
Aug. 9, 1995: 11-year-old Daniel Desrochers was killed in east-end Montreal when a car bomb went off on Adam St. in Montreal. The attacked was pinned on the Hell's Angels.
Nov. 5, 1995: A 34-year-old man, André Dallaire, managed to slip past security at 24 Sussex Drive and into then-Prime Minister Jean Chrétien's residence, brandishing a knife. Dallaire was later found not criminally responsible because of mental illness.
Sept. 13, 2006: A shooting at Dawson College claims the life of an 18-year-old student, Anastasia De Sousa, and leaves 20 others injured.
Sept. 4, 2012: Richard Henry Bain shoots and kills a stagehand and injures another man at the Metropolis, where the Parti Québecois were holding their victory party following the 2012 Quebec election.
June 4, 2014: Three RCMP officers in Moncton, N.B. are shot to death, prompting a 28-hour lockdown of a section of the city that culminates in the arrest of 24-year-old Justin Bourque.
Oct 20, 2014: In St. Jean sur Richelieu, Martin Couture-Rouleau, a radicalized Muslim convert, runs down two Canadian forces members in a parking lot, killing one, Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent. Couture-Rouleau is later killed in a police chase.
Oct. 22, 2014: In the name of radical Islam, Michael Zehaf-Bibeau guns down Cpl. Nathan Cirillo at Ottawa's National War Memorial, then storms the Canadian Parliament building. Zehaf-Bibeau is shot to death by sergeant-at-arms Kevin Vickers.
Jan 29, 2017: At least six people were gunned down during Sunday evening prayers at an Islamic cultural centre in the Quebec City district of Ste. Foy.
