There are no power outages being reported by Hydro-Quebec on six streets in Verdun, but taking a stroll down any of them you'd find it hard to believe.
Stephens, Rolland, Valiquette, Allard, Berling and Monteith streets have been as dark as the night's sky for the past 10 nights, and 52 nights off and on since the summer.
Residents say the problem began after crews ripped up the roads.
Now they're worried with the sun setting earlier each night, and with snow and ice on the way, it will make driving very difficult and put pedestrians at risk.
"When people are coming from work or school, to walk through the streets you have like a flashlight to be secure" resident James Hill told CTV Montreal. "It's not normal is 2016."
City councillor Sterling Downey agrees.
"I assume that this is going to go on longer than days, this is going to go on for weeks and the problem is, we're going to need to put in some sort of temporary lighting system," he said. "The most logical one would be solar powered construction lights."
According to the borough, new equipment that was installed to upgrade the lighting system has been short-circuiting the older equipment that's buried underground.
There is no timeframe for fixing the problem, but in a letter to residents, the borough advised them to keep their porch lights on to help light the roads.
