Riot police moved in Friday evening during an anti-Donald Trump protest in downtown Montreal, the second such demonstration during the day after he was sworn in as the 45th US President.
The subsequent protest began in Phillips Square against racist sentiments by Trump.
Protesters, estimated at roughly 150, eventually moved onto Ste Catherine street west and marched into traffic, but then things changed quickly.
"Then, once they reached the police station number 20, near Bishop street, they started to throw rocks at the police and that's when police started to deploy pepper spray and the riot squad then came on to the scene and the demonstration broke up", said CTV's Denise Roberts.
Among other things, several shop windows were smashed on Ste Catherine street and cars were spray-painted.
There was no word yet on any arrests or injuries, although it seemed, Roberts added, that no one was hurt.
Protesters gathered at the U-S consulate in Montreal earlier to burn the American flag -- and an effigy of Donald Trump.
That demonstration was primarily peaceful and police made no arrests.
There is a larger women's march planned for Saturday at 11 a.m., beginning at the Esplanade de la Place des Arts.
CJAD 800 News will be there as well as at a similar, huge protest in Washington also on Saturday.
