Putting all Montreal - Toronto rivalries aside, what Auston Matthews did in his NHL debut was historic.
This summer's first overall draft pick, and potential Maple Leafs saviour, managed to pull off a feat never seen before in the National Hockey League.
Matthews scored four goals Wednesday, becoming the first rookie to ever score four in his debut.
There had been four rookie debut hat-tricks prior to last night, but no one had ever scored four goals.
Considering the names that came before him (Maurice Richard, Guy Lafleur, Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin just to name a few) it truly is an amazing accomplishment
To say Leafs fans were excited would be an understatement, with at least one fan updating Matthews' Wikipedia page to acknowledge his impressive debut.
The page has since returned to normal.
News of the four goal night did not take long to make its way around the league, with many current and former players taking to Twitter with their thoughts.
In the end though, the debut was spoiled by poor goaltending and the Leafs being the Leafs, squandering the near perfect performance, losing to Ontario rivals the Ottawa Senators 5-4 in overtime.
