What started as a fun day playing outside at the end of a long weekend has ended in heartbreak.
Montreal police confirmed a 5-year-old boy died after he fell into an in-ground pool in the backyard of a home on Sainte-Croix in Pierrefonds Monday.
The young child and his older brother, aged 10, were at friend's house, playing by the pool when he fell into the icy water. The 10-year-old quickly jumped in to try and save his brother.
The first police officers on scene performed CPR on the 5-year-old until paramedics arrived. He was rushed to hospital in cardiac arrest. His death was later confirmed in hospital.
The older child was also taken to hospital. Police said he is in serious but stable condition and is expected to recover.
The pool was still closed for the winter.
The investigation has been transferred to the coroner's office.
