The Fédération des cégeps will appear before a National Assembly committee today to call for a ban on the sale of marijuana near schools.
In its brief, federation president Bernard Tremblay says that educators are concerned that the impending legalization of the recreational use of marijuana will trivialize its use and allowing the establishment of marijuana sales outlets near schools would be almost an invitation to consume marijuana.
The Journal de Montreal says the organization wants a ban on marijuana sales outlets near all schools, CEGEPs and universities.
It also will ask the government to reverse a decision to permit students aged 18 and over to possess marijuana on campus because 24% of CEGEP students are minors and policing such a policy would be extremely difficult.
