A city mistake that resulted in the surprise closure of a Griffintown bar has led to compensation of nearly half a million dollars.
The Metro newspaper reported bar Playground, located on Notre-Dame West, will receive $435,000 in damages in an out-court-settlement from the Sud-Ouest borough.
The ping pong bar opened nearly two years ago and had been issued a bar permit before its opening, but it was learned last winter that the building where establishment was located wasn't eligible for one.
The bar's owners were seeking over a million dollars in compensation because of the error.
The case was to be heard in Quebec Superior Court.
It appears noise complaints from neighbours complicated the bar's situation, perhaps attracting scrutiny that later revealed the permit snafu.
