The City of Montreal found itself powerless a few weeks ago when disgraced former Montreal mayor Michael Applebaum sold his house in Côte-des-Neiges for almost a million dollars.
The Journal de Montreal reports the city could not slap a lien on the proceeds even though it's in court trying to get the former mayor to give back nearly $270,000 in departure and transition payments he received when he quit politics under a cloud of controversy in 2013.
Applebaum was later convicted of corruption-related charges dating back to his time as mayor of the Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough.
The next court hearing in the reimbursement case is in November.
