Quebecers who believed a promise that they'd get free internet surfing for life by buying a CD-Rom have some compensation coming to them.
Back in 2000 and 2001, about 50,000 Quebecers paid $9.95 for the CD-Rom offered jointly by Canada Post and Cybersurf Corporation.
Cybersurf was banking on selling advertising to underwrite the free internet surfing but soon found itself in financial trouble and started asking users to pay monthly fees. That sparked the class action lawsuit.
As La Presse reports, a Superior Court judge this month authorized a class action settlement giving buyers of the CD-Rom $175 each in compensation, provided that they could produce the disk or show proof of purchase.
Consumers in other provinces were previous awarded other amounts.
