Here's a cautionary tale about a fly-by-night Boisbriand company going door-to-door offering to do mold cleanup.
La Presse reports that Décontamination Optimum has since lost its contractor permit after scamming homeowners.
Régis Couture was one of them.
The Roberval retiree said he believed the slick and professional presentation by Décontamination Optimum which convinced him he needed an inspection and needed their services after showing him photos of mold problems in his attic - photos that he later discovered were from a Google search.
"They had all the answers to the questions we had," said Couture in an interview with CJAD 800.
Couture said red flags went up soon afterwards.
"Five minutes after leaving my house, they charged my (credit) card," said Couture, even though they had told him he wouldn't have to pay until the job was done.
And then Couture had a counter-expertise done.
"There was no work (done), no mushrooms, no moississures (mold), nothing like that," said Couture.
Couture contested the contract and got his $4500 back two months later.
Couture said he's since spoken with others who were also duped and he's now speaking out about his experience to warn others about such possible scams.
"We don't want to go public about that," said a slightly embarrassed Couture.
"But I think we have to protect some people who can't defend themselves."
CJAD 800 Is awaiting comment from Décontamination Optimum.
