An ongoing project to revitalize the Pointe-Claire Village has run into a snag — the contractor appears to have gone under in mid-project.
But even if nobody has been working along Cartier Ave. for the past week or so, ripped-up sections of pavement, construction equipment, and orange cones are still littering the street.
The work to revitalize the stretch of Cartier Ave. has been going on since the summer, but local merchants say there hasn't been any activity on the work site since Thursday, and many of them are concerned about losing business, especially during the busy Christmas shopping period.
Pointe-Claire mayor John Belvedere says there's a good reason for the interruption — the company doing the work, GT Excavation, filed for bankruptcy last week.
But he adds the city has sprung into action to find a replacement — he says the city has been in contact with other potential contractors.
"If for some reason, the contractors can't do [the work]...the City of Pointe-Claire will implement emergency processes and we'll get the street paved, at least for the winter," Belvedere says.
Despite the delays, Belvedere says he hopes the job will be completed by Dec. 15., though Belvedere says he expects to have a more precise completion date once a new contractor is in place.
He hopes to get that finalized, and work restarted, by next week.
In the meantime, the city has announced an information meeting for residents and local merchants will take place this coming Monday, Dec. 4 at the Beaconsfield Golf Club.
