A Montreal woman sentenced to life in prison for killing the 4-year-old son of her spouse in 2008 has been granted permission for escorted day trips.
Stéphanie Meunier. 40. was found guilty of first degree murder in June 2011 in the beating death of Jeremy Bastien-Perron. Evidence showed that Meunier not only delivered the fatal blow but severely beat the toddler in the days leading up to his death.
Since then, the parole board said it has noted that Meunier has been a model inmate who has recognized her responsibiity for the crime, expressed remorse and has become more calm and mature.
For the past year Meunier been taking part in programs focusing on family relations and self-improvement which have gone well. They're aimed at boosting self-esteem, reducing isolation and improving the chances of reintegrating into society.
The board, based on the recommendation of her case management officer, agreed that Meunier is at low risk of re-offending and that she would benefit from the escorted day trips so she can take part in more of those programs.
Meunier is eligible for parole after 25 years.
