The Couillard government is looking at raising the minimum age to collect benefits from the Quebec Pension Plan. Right now, a contributor must be at least 60 in order to get benefits.
Finance Minister Carlos Leitao says 60 may be too young, given that people are living longer and there is a growing need to keep experienced workers on the job because there are fewer young people to replace them.
Leitao also notes that keeping people working past 60 means they'll keep contributing to the pension plan, helping to keep it viable.
La Presse reports that Quebecers tend to retire earlier than workers in other provinces, at an average age of 62.
