It's only 10 years old, but Montreal's Place des Festivals, the place where Montrealers gather for major jazz and comedy festival events, is showing unmistakable signs of wear.
The Journal de Montréal reports there are at least 120 granite slabs that need to be changed, out of more than 6,400 — most of which can be found at the De Maisonneuve end, where concert stages for the summer festivals are usually set up.
The city is planning a significant refurbishment to the plaza this spring, according to the report.
The Place des Festivals was inaugurated with much fanfare by then-mayor Gérald Tremblay in 2009, who said at the time it was proof that "Montreal knows how to do things well". The slabs were last replaced in 2011, at a cost of $650,000.
