Quebec's rental board will issue its annual guidelines for rent increases in the coming weeks.
For now, it's come out with suggestions as to what factors may contribute to an increase.
For example, if you're renting an apartment that's heated by home heating oil, you might be in line for a big hike.
"This year, there's a fairly big increase for oil, which could have an impact of a couple of per cent on the rent increase, depending on the situation, so, that's not very good news", said Arnold Bennett, a tenants' rights activist.
The cost of providing heat from electricity and natural gas aren't expected to have a big impact on rents.
