It's tobacco-free week in Quebec.
The Quebec Council on Tobacco and Health reported more than 5,000 Quebecers died of lung cancer because of smoking in2016.
It added, on average, 14 Quebecers died that way every day last year.
One official said the survival rate for lung cancer after five years is only 17 per cent.
"This is an opportunity for everyone to attempt to quit smoking. Many people would have started with New Year's resolutions, it's way to continue doing so. Also, this week is an opportunity to increase awareness of how serious smoking is in terms of health and all the opportunities there are to further reduce smoking rates in Canada", said Rob Cunningham, senior policy analyst with the Canadian Cancer Society, in an interview with CJAD News.
Lung cancer is said to be the most aggressive of cancers and the most diagnosed.
