Dozens of dogs that were saved from slaughter at a Chinese dog meat festival and brought to Montreal were made available for adoption Friday—and by the end of the day most had found new homes, according to the Montreal SPCA.
The city's Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals took the dogs in on Dec. 23 last year, after they were rescued by Humane Society International and brought to Canada.
"Having received the care from canine behaviour experts, veterinarians and staff at the shelter, the dogs are available for adoption," the SPCA said in a statement on Friday.
According to a later post to social media from the animal welfare group, many of the 32 pups were adopted within hours.
"With your help and your big hearts, the majority of the dogs saved from slaugther at China’s dog meat festival have already found their new families," read a statement shared on the group's social media pages.
