The city of Montreal recorded its 22nd and 23rd homicides after two women were attacked in a Hochelaga-Maissoneuve apartment on Souligny avenue overnight.
Monteal police said they received a 9-1-1 call a little after 3am.
When officers arrived they found the two women, aged fifty-five and seventy-five, suffering from multiple stab wounds.
"A man of thirty-five years old who was at the address when the police arrived has been arrested by the police and been transported to the detention centre," said a police spokesperson.
The older of the two women was sent to hospital in critical condition, but died of her injuries mid-morning.
The 55-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene by Urgence Santé and initial information from police suggested the victims are the mother and grandmother of the man in custody.
Their identities were not released as of midday.
Police said investigators would meet with and question the suspect.
