First we got an anglophone relations minister; now Le Devoir reports that at the upcoming Quebec Liberal policy convention, delegates will be debating five resolutions focused on anglos.
Some may criticize it as a charm offensive for next year's election.
"Well, I think it's quite charming," said Geoffrey Chambers, vice president of the umbrella group representing minority groups, the Quebec Community Groups Network which had some input on the resolutions.
One of the resolutions: that all new laws be vetted to see how it would impact the anglophone community.
"That leads to a little bit of useful homework that avoids embarassing errors," said Chambers in an interview with CJAD 800 News.
"The Bill 86 education reform which was introduced a couple of years ago got to second reading in the National Assembly before someone twigged that it was unconstitutional."
Another proposal: to ensure that anglos get a proportional part of civil service jobs.
"Trying to find ways of getting the barriers that prevent English-speaking people from having a good shot at jobs in the Quebec civil service, for reducing those barriers," said Chambers.
Chambers reminds us that these are just proposals .
"Òbviously ìt's a long road between being adopted as an idea at a political convention before it becomes actual government policy and even has force of law, but it's maybe a first step," said Chambers.
The policy convention is being held November 24-26 in Quebec City.
