The mayor of a small town north of Montreal says a group of Hasidic Jews occupying a couple of homes in his village have until tonight to leave under court order.
Denis Chalifoux says he had little choice but to obtain an expulsion order after Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts residents complained the group made constant noise that ran late into the night.
He says up to 50 Hasidic Jews were living in two small homes in the town and using them as dormitories, which is against municipal law.
Alex Werzberger, a member of the Hasidic community in Montreal whose his grandson works in the town, says the homes were being used as a private, all-boys school for the summer.
He says the boys might have been a little rambunctious but he doesn't believe they made enough noise to warrant an expulsion order.
Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts and several villages in the Laurentians are home to various Jewish communities, some of whom have been the victims of hate crimes over the years.
Chalifoux said most of the young men had already left as of Thursday afternoon and added a city employee would pass by Friday morning to make sure the court order had been respected.
