Distracted driving is still an issue in Quebec, accounting for about one-quarter of all roadway fatalities.
For years groups have been calling for stiffer fines for those caught with a cell phone behind the wheel. Earlier this month several groups including provincial police, the SAAQ, and driver safety organizations told a National Assembly committee the province needs to crack down on distracted drivers.
Now new documents show the provincial government is set to listen.
Fines for driving with a cell phone would be increased to somewhere between $300 and $400. The current penalty is $80 to $100 and four demerit points.
The Highway Safety Code update would bring Quebec in line with the penalties in Ontario and British Columbia.
Distracted driving is not unique to Quebec. It is a dangerous and potentially deadly habit seen across Canada.
In Vancouver this week police pulled over a driver who was listening to music with headphones. When he was pulled over the officer found the driver had a cell phone and tablet tied to his steering wheel. The driver was only given an $81 ticket for not having his driver's licence.
