Predictions where calling for lots of snow, but instead the Montreal and surrounding areas were hit with freezing rain throughout Tuesday's morning rush, causing several major accidents and closing schools.
The morning started with a multi-vehicle accident on Highway 20 east near St. Zotique, one truck driver suffered minor injuries.
Just a couple of hours later 10 vehicles were involved in a massive pileup on Highway 40 west at Cavendish Blvd. There were no serious injuries reported, but the accident closed the highway for a good chunk of the morning rush.
Streets and highways in and around Montreal were skating rinks for most of the morning, causing dozens of smaller accidents, as the freezing rain continued to fall.
There were multiple delays for users of public transit as well.
In Laval, STL service was outright suspended as the roads became too dangerous for drivers and passengers. In Longueuil, RTL service saw major disruptions throughout the morning. On the island of Montreal, service was never canceled, though several drivers determined road conditions were too dangerous and pulled over to the side of the road and waited for salt trucks to pass.
Many school boards in and around Montreal decided to close to both students and staff Tuesday.
Environment Canada's snowfall warning, which was originally calling for 25 centimetres by the end of the day, was changed to add the freezing rain warning near the end of the regular morning rush hours. The snowfall warning was also adjusted, now calling for 10 to 15 centimetres.
