The eight-year old girl who drowned in the Magog River in the Eastern Townships last weekend was one of the Syrian refugees Canada welcomed a couple of years ago.
Rahaf Sana Aidy and her four brothers arrived here after spending time in a refugee camp in Turkey. They were among 25,000 Syrians welcomed under a special program set up by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Aidy and her family lived in an apartment not far from the river in Sherbrooke.
The Journal de Montreal reports that when she and a friend slipped on rocks and fell into the water on Sunday, her 15-year old brother jumped in to help. He managed to get the friend to safety but his sister slipped from his grip and she was swept away by the current.
