The Humboldt Broncos bus crash that killed 16 people and injured 13 others has been selected as the top news story in Canada in 2018.
Across the country, 129 editors voted in the annual survey taken by The Canadian Press and 53 picked the deadly crash as the most compelling story of the year.
The Saskatchewan junior hockey team was on its way to a playoff game in April when its bus and a semi-truck collided at a rural intersection near Tisdale, Sask.
The crash made headlines around the world and struck a chord with hockey-loving Canadians, many of whom saw themselves and their children in the young players and their parents.
Legalization of recreational cannabis came in a close second with 51 votes — though that story was picked by all 13 Quebec francophone editors who took part in the survey.
