Both bridges on the western tip of the island are affected by closures, as concerns about rising flood waters continue to grow.
On Sunday morning, Transport Quebec announced a partial closure of the Ile-aux-Tourtes Bridge between Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue and Vaudreuil-Dorion — until further notice, one lane will be closed in each direction.
Transport Quebec spokesperson Martin Girard says the lanes are being closed because crews are sandbagging and area near Highway 40 — and have been since Friday.
"Transport Quebec is using sandbags to protect the highway, so it's built on the shoulder of the Highway 40, to protect it from the flooding," Girard says.
Meanwhile, the Galipeault bridge — the Highway 20 bridge — has been closed since Saturday morning because of rising water levels, forcing motorists to make significant detours via Highways 30 and 40.
For now, Transport Quebec has temporarily removed the toll on Highway 30 until the situation reverts to normal.
Meanwhile, Girard says if the closures remain in effect into Monday morning — which is highly likely — he expects the rush hour to be busy, and is urging people to plan their trips accordingly.
"We expect it will be busy. If the Galipeault Bridge is still closed on Monday morning, we expect it will have an important impact on traffic, so we invite people to plan their trip," Girard says. "Also, it will be free on the Vaudreuil-Hudson train line, so people are invited to use public transit...if the bridge is still closed on Monday."
