Quebec's Justice Ministry is issuing a warning about a new phone scam.
The calls, supposedly coming from a Justice Ministry operative, ask people to confirm their social insurance numbers — something the justice department would never do, either by robocall or text message.
The justice department is urging anyone receiving that kind of a phone call not to give away any personal information, and to hang up.
It's also pointing out that Quebecers' personal information has not been compromised in any way, and that authorities are aware of the scam.
If you get a call from a scammer, you're being advised to get in touch with:
• Your local police force
• The SQ (310-4141)
• The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (1-888-495-8501)
Or, you can contact Quebec's justice ministry directly, at 1-866-536-5140, and then press 4.
