A fire chief says if there were working smoke alarms in the apartment, the man could very well still be alive.

Flames broke out in the bedroom of a second-floor apartment on Plateau-Ouimet St. near St-Rose Blvd. around 1:22 a.m. on Wednesday, leaving the 75-year-old occupant dead.

The man was discovered by firefighters in the hallway. He had swallowed a lot of smoke and was found in cardiac arrest and could not be revived, Laval Fire chief of operations Michel St-Jean confirmed to CJAD 800 News.

There were no working smoke detectors in the apartment, and St-Jean says if there were, the man could very well still be alive.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, but St-Jean says the blaze is being considered accidental.
