As promised during the recent election campaign, residents of Laval can expect a small tax-increase in 2018. Property owners, residential or not, will all see their taxes increase by 1.4% next year.
Mayor Marc Demers says that’ll cover more organic waste removal, construction of public buildings like the aquatic centre and an enhanced support program for seniors.
This budget also corrects an inequality in fees for snow removal, which has been ongoing for decades.
Some single-family homeowners will pay more, on top of the 1.4% increase, as Laval corrects the inequality that has over-taxed condo owners since the 1990s.
“Basically, you would have maybe a six-story condo building and everybody in that building would pay $200,” said Demers. “To remove a yard of snow would cost a lot for that building compared to a resident where people...it’s unifamiliale.”
While some may claim that’s unfair, they should be glad Demers was clear that Laval won’t be seeking back-taxes, instead.
“No, we’re not going to go there,” he said.
