It may cost the city of Montreal as much as $9M a year to deal with the legalization of marijuana - that includes more police to enforce the law and training for city workers.
The city has tabled its brief to the Quebec government on its expectations of the pending law.
Valérie Plante said during this morning's executive committee meeting that while they welcome the incoming marijuana law, the Montreal mayor added they need major resources to make sure they can harmonize it with city life and their reality.
Plante said they also expect their expenses and their share of any tax revenue to change because of what is an evolving market.
The mayor said they also want flexibility in dealing with public pot smoking.
The official opposition Ensemble Montreal meantime wants no pot smoking in public areas.
