First responders in Florida went well above and beyond the call of duty when responding to a heart attack call.
On Saturday, Gene Work was working with his brother on his front lawn, laying down some recently purchased sod. At one point in the afternoon Gene fell ill and suffered a heart attack.
Before being rushed to hospital and while falling in and out of consciousness, Gene was pleading with his wife Melissa Ann to finish laying down the sod because he worried it would die and be wasted.
"It's ALL he kept asking about literally during a massive heart attack," Melissa Ann Work wrote in a Facebook post.
Work joined her husband in the ambulance while her brother-in-law stayed behind to babysit his brother's 2-year-old daughter and to finish the job Gene wanted completed so badly.
Not long after a fire truck and ambulance came back down the street towards the house.
"Before he knows it (sic), seven firefighters and EMTs jumped out, put on gloves and said they came back because they knew Gene was in serious trouble and they wanted to lay the new sod so it didn't die," Work wrote. "They came back!!! They saved his life, dropped him off and then cared enough to save our GRASS!!"
Work said the men had no idea the struggles and increased stress the family has been under recently.
Melissa Ann is preparing to undergo a bone marrow transplant next month and her husband had been working tirelessly to fix up their lawn because the homeowner's association had been threatening the family with fines because of the state of their old lawn.
"They didn't know all we have been through as a little family," she said. "They simply saw someone in need, something in need and did this for us."
