Swedish national broadcaster, SVT, reports that a 60-year-old man has died after picking up an object off the ground near a subway station in Stockholm, which then detonated in his hand.
Swedish police would not immediately confirm the death.
Stockholm regional police spokesperson, Sven-Erik Olsson, said the explosion occured outside Varby Gard subway station in a residential district of greater Stockholm. A woman in her forties who was with the man received minor wounds to her face and legs. Police are investigating the object.
Swedish tabloids claim the device may have been a hand grenade, but authorities dismissed the idea as speculation.
The man was rushed to hospital, but later died of his injuries.
