A Mirabel men is in trouble with the taxman for offering advice on how to dodge taxes.
Pierre Daoust has developed a novel interpretation of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, arguing that it gives each Quebecer the ability to shift tax bills, Hydro bills and other debts onto a distinct legal persona which is immune to orders to pay up.
La Presse reports that Daoust's web activity caught the eye of Canada's revenue agency and officers were in the crowd of 50 that attended a free seminar he offered in Saint Jerome last fall.
The tax investigators allege that he is using "Free Man on the Land" and "Sovereign Citizen" style arguments that have been discredited by court rulings in Canada.
This week, they mounted three raids, accusing Daoust of counselling people to evade taxes.
Daoust promptly went on Facebook and announced that he will sue the government for $3.5 million in compensation.
