Montrealers gathered at Place du Canada Saturday to mark Remembrance Day.
84 year-old, Alphonse Martel fought in the Korean War when he was just 19.
Martel said it is important for Canadians to know and remember their history.
"They don't talk too much about The Korean War at school. So young people don't learn about the past history", said Martel.
Second lieutenant Etienne Don-Marcil reiterated that it is important to remember Canada's younger veterans.
"When people think about veterans, they think about World War One or World War Two. But some millennials went to war —they served in Afghanistan. Remembrance Day is for them also", he said.
During the ceremony, Mayor Denis Coderre and Mayor-elect Valerie Plante laid a wreath on the Cenotaph.
The event was Denis Coderre's last act as Mayor before Valerie Plante is sworn in.
"It is the ultimate sacrifice to protect our way of life and values," said Coderre.
The boom of a 21 gun salute echoed among the downtown buildings on Remembrance Day, marking 99 years to the day since the end of World War I.
