A couple of Quebec nationalist groups have criticized Mayor Valérie Plante's budget speech, but not for what she said, but rather for how she said it.
The Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Montréal and Mouvement Montréal français say Plante spoke too much English last week and that generally she speaks too much English.
They cite the city charter which states Montreal is a French language city and urge the Mayor to reject what they describe as " "institutional bilingualism".
The mayor's office tells Radio Canada that the criticism is unwarranted, that the mayor has respect for the French reality in Montreal and although she is comfortable in English, she speaks French most of the time.
