A new opinion poll has unveiled a sharp divide between Quebec and the rest of the country when it comes to cannabis.
The study, conducted by Environics Analytics and Vividata, shows that Quebecers harbour much more conservative attitudes towards the substance than the rest of Canada. While in other provinces, social acceptance of pot stood at between 50% and 60%, it was just 32% in Quebec.
In line with recent data from Statistics Canada, the Environics survey also showed that Quebec has the fewest number of regular pot users as a proportion to its population. Only 37% of people in Quebec under 35 say they've consumed marijuana before, compared to a national average of around 40%.
According to the poll, Quebec is also the only Canadian province where tobacco is more socially accepted (40%) than is cannabis (32%).
Environics surveyed 5000 people over the age of 19 across Canada. Cannabis will become legal for recreational uses across Canada this fall, on October 17th.
