Would you consider yourself a distracted driver? If you answered no, there's one of two options - A: You're in the overwhelming minority, 2: You're lying.
According to a new Léger poll conducted on behalf of Allstate Insurance Company of Canada, 91 per cent of Quebec drivers surveyed admitted to engaging in risky behaviour while behind the wheel.
Of those, half confessed to talking on the phone (via a hands-free device) but only 20 per cent self-identified as a distracted driver.
Taking advantage of the driver-assisted technology in their car was the another source of distraction for Quebecers: four out of ten playing with the integrated multimedia functions to listen to music, 35 per cent say they've used hands-free multimedia options to text friends or read emails.
At least 25 per cent of respondents admit to using their phone, 23 per cent noted they may have stopped paying attention to the road in order to adjust their GPS.
Experts say it is all about awareness.
"We can't avoid new technology and the changes that come with it; and nor would we want to. Our cars are becoming safer," says André Parra, Regional Claims Director at Allstate Insurance Company of Canada. "However, what we need to do is ensure it's being used properly, as opposed to creating more distractions for drivers."
