It's budget day at City Hall and while it's not yet known where millions of taxpayer money will be spent, we know one controversial cost has been cut.
According to TVA, new Mayor Valerie Plante and Martin Prud'homme, the acting head of the Montreal police department, have agreed to abolish bonuses paid to senior officers if ticket quotas were met.
The practice made headlines in 2016 after it was revealed some managers were paid up to eight per cent of their salary.
The Police Brotherhood denounced the bonuses, even going as far as paying for a billboard reminding Montrealers to pay attention to the rules of the road to avoid being a victim of "les Boni$ Deni$," referring to former Mayor Denis Coderre.
Plante told the French news network not only was ending the bonuses the right message to send to Montrealers, but it was not the right way to ensure public safety. She added police resources should not be spent trapping motorists, cyclists and pedestrians in order to fill a quota.
The new Mayor said Montreal wants police officers who want to do their job well and who are not motivated by making money.
