With all the tax scams making the rounds on what seems like a constant basis, you would think you can trust the phone numbers printed on official documents sent by government agencies.
Well...
One day Gatineau resident Jean-François Dorais decided to call the toll free number listed at the bottom of his partner's alimony statements. The voice on the other end of the phone was looking to help, just not in the tax purposes sort of way.
"Welcome to America's hottest talk line!" says a woman's voice. "Guys hot ladies are ready to talk to you ... Ladies to talk to interesting and exciting guys free press 2 to connect free now!"
Dorais said at first he thought the phone fumble was a funny mistake and tried to flag the issue with Revenu Quebec but the number kept showing up, at least three or four months in a row.
This week he took the issue to social media, hoping to get the word out. Dorais said while most may get a chuckle out of the wrong number, someone who actually needs help won't be able to get it.
Revenu Quebec has apologized for the error, saying the 1-888 number is an old one no longer used by the agency.
