A pedestrian safety awareness group is speaking out against the prospect of bringing right-on-red to the island of Montreal.
Pietons Quebec wants to have an outright ban on motorists turning right on a red light across Quebec, said co-spokesperson Felix Gravel, and the demerged island mayors should not be pushing for right-on-red when they "have a duty" to ensure the safety of pedestrians.
“Space has been allocated more and more to cars,” he said, adding that allowing rights turns on red stoplight poses a constant danger.
He says that barring right turns red lights is one of the few traffic planning features dedicated to pedestrians' safety.
“This is the minimum to be preserved for their safety,” he said.
