The world's second largest medical marijuana producer is getting set to start growing pot in Pointe Claire.
Aurora Cannabis, which took over the old Peloton plant on Hymus has just been granted its cultivation permit from Health Canada.
It would be Montreal's first legal cannabis production facility and it'll be called Aurora Vie.
"That moved incredibly quickly and we're very pleased," said executive vice president Cam Battley in an interview on the Andrew Carter Show.
Battley said they got their permit in less than six months. They'll start growing marijuana this month with their first harvest in the first few months of next year.
"There'll be no store on the premises," said Battley. Besides selling here, they'll also target the German and other European markets. They'll produce cannabis oils and have new growing techniques to grow different strains of marijuana, "including some exotic and rare strains."
At full capacity, they're expected to be capable of producing up to nearly 4,000 kg of cannabis a year.
"People often don't know what to expect when they see a cannabis production facility," said Battley.
"Perhaps they assume there'll be a warehouse full of plants and it's much more sophisticated than that."
