If you have a couple million dollars burning a hole in your pocket, a famous Quebec building just went up for sale.
If you're interested, the $2,850,000 property sits on 306-acres, includes three cottages, a garage/warehouse, barn and stable, a chalet once used for an old campground and as an added bonus has a small island on the Nicolet River.
Oh, it's also home to what is said to be one of the most haunted buildings in the province.
The Sainte-Clotilde-de-Horton Asylum went up for sale this week.
The building near Victoriaville has been abandoned for three decades, but continues to attract hundreds of visitors and amateur ghost hunters each year. Last October a judge ordered it be boarded up because it was deemed to be a serious safety risk to anyone who enters.
The former asylum was built in 1939 and has been the site of two fatal fires.
In 1959, while the building was being used as an orphanage, three boys died after a fire broke out on the third floor. In 1988, while being used as a rehabilitation centre for people with mental illness, nine patients died in a large fire that damaged most of the building, ultimately forcing its closure.
If an old abandoned asylum and the site of two deadly blazes wasn't enough to give you goosebumps, many ghost hunting websites tell stories of doctors performing bizarre experiments on patients, along with electroshock therapy and lobotomies.
The town of Sainte-Clotilde-de-Horton wants the building demolished, and has been involved in a lengthy court case with the current owner to get its wish.
