A Waterloo university professor said he believes edible marijuana products will fall between the cracks of legislation regulating Canada’s food industry.
Professor Ken Diplock added there's is a risk of people becoming sick, not so much from the marijuana, but from poor quality control, for example, at a marijuana cookie plant.
Diplock, described as a certified public health inspector, has been quite outspoken about marijuana edibles.
He also said this new industry may not be monitored and he wondered about regulation.
Diplock had a number of questions.
"It is going to be considered a food and if it's a food is that gonna fall under federal regulations, is it going to be provincial... where is it going to be treated or is the food is simply a vehicle for the delivery and will be looked at more through medicine", said Diplock.
Diplock added risks would be similar to any food items using raw ingredients.
The federal government’s plan is to legalize recreational marijuana by July, 2018.
