Quebec's auto insurance board, the SAAQ, is advising people to ignore text messages inviting them to pay their licence fees via text message.
The SAAQ issued the advisory on its Facebook page earlier this week.
A screenshot of the text message in question is supposedly from the board's technical support unit, and it reads: "It is now possible to renew your driver's licence by following this link."
The link in question takes you to a place where you're asked to provide personal information — name, address, licence number, and credit card information.
The board says, it's a phishing scam, and that it doesn't provide any such service. It says if you get this kind of a message, delete it and forget about it.
And whatever you do, don't give them any of your personal information.
Earlier this month, Hydro-Quebec advised its customers about a similar text-message phishing scam, using its name and logo.
Basically, if you do get a suspicious-looking text message, the best advice is to use your common sense — if something looks fishy, it most likely is.
