The Sainte-Justine Hospital is strapped for cash and is hoping to lobby the province for a few million dollars to get back in the black, according to La Presse.
In an interview with Quebec's newspaper of record, hospital executive director Fabrice Brunet revealed Sainte-Justine is already facing a $7.5 million deficit for the 2016-2017 fiscal year.
The added costs related to the recent move of its emergency room, and other patients, to a new wing, plus an increase in patient volume, is what pushed the hospital over-budget, said Brunet.
The Ministry of Health and Social Services says the latest figures the hospital pegged the annual budgetary deficit at $2 million, adding that $5.2 million was also given, to go towards paying for the new building.
A spokesperson for the ministry says considering it finances the additional costs related to the new pavilion, there should be no reason the deficit should go up because of the opening of the new building.
