If you are returning your Samsung Galaxy Note7 devices for refunds, there are steps to take that are outlined on their website.
The refund process started today as part of a global safety recall after reports of overheating batteries that could create a fire hazard.
CTV tech analyst Carmi Levy said before returning the device, consider whether you want to save information and photos on it. If you don't, return it right away. If you do:
"You still want to make sure that any data you have on the phone is fully synched and backed up before you get rid of it. You want to plug it in - very carefully because of course it's still defective - you want to make sure that all of your photos, contact information, calendar entries, anything like that are fully off the phone and the phone is completely wiped before you send it back," said Levy in an interview with CJAD 800 News.
Levy said there's no guarantee that the phone you have is not defective so you have to take extra precautions.
"Plug it in, monitor it very carefully, put it on a hard surface, not near anything flammable and monitor it while you're doing the backup. It shouldn't take very long anyway so that if it gets too hot, then unplug it," said Levy.
"As soon as the backup is done, wipe the device and then power it down permanently, never to be turned on again."
