Earlier in the night a smoke alarm helped a mother and her two young children flee their apartment after a fire broke out in the kitchen of their home in Dorval on Lakeshore Blvd.
It all happened at about 11:10 P.M. when a toaster malfunctioned and caught fire. The woman forgot about her toast and had fallen asleep but was woken up by the alarm inside the apartment.
She and her two young children fled the apartment safely but needed to be treated for smoke inhalation.
Firefighters managed to control the fire quickly, keeping it contained to just the kitchen of the one apartment.
Damage is estimated at $25,000.
