Just two years after its introduction the Sûreté du Québec is shutting down its Amber Alert app citing the declining number of subscribers and more effective methods of communicating.
Two years ago when it was first launched the SQ app had 70,000 subscribers, but today there are fewer than 6000.
In a statement the police force says social media networks such as Twitter and Facebook have become much more effective in disseminating information.
The police department has an agreement with Facebook to post Amber Alerts when requested.
The Sûreté du Québec will be discontinued as of tomorrow.
