The paint has been peeling off if for years, and it hasn't actually kept water in 15 years.
The landmark water tower, just off of Highway 20 in Ste. Anne de Bellevue, has been decribed as an "eyesore" by the town's mayor, Paola Hawa.
When asked why now is the best time to start renovations on it, she responded, "If not now, when?"
Hawa said it was time to take responsibility before the 40-foot tower deteriorated further.
They're going to repair the tower by patching it up and painting it grey and white.
But the renovations aren't cheap -- they're costing the town $468,000 for repairs and a paint job.
For Hawa, this option made more sense, rather than spending around $800,000 to demolish and rebuild the tower.
She also defended the price tag because the water tower is seen as an icon to the community.
"A great majority of citizens wanted it kept as symbol of Sainte Anne's, so in that sense, if it gives people a sense of community and a seanse of city and 'appartenance', yes it's worth it," Hawa said.
Longtime Ste. Anne resident John Thompson has driven by the tower every day since 1972.
Although, for him, the tower is a "mess", he said he doesn't want to see it drastically changed because of its heritage.
"I hope the character of the tower is still there," Thompson said. "I hope it's not doctered up so much that it looks completely different."
Though, Thompson is looking forward to the fact that the tower will soon look a little better.
"I'm kinda glad they are going to paint it and they are going to fix it up," he said. "It would be nice if they do something a little bit more permanent with it but again that costs money."
Renovations to the tower have already begun, and the project is expected to wrap up in October.
Mayor Hawa said she's looking forward to its completion, and wants residents to feel the same.
"I hope they're going to be proud and I hope they're going to like their new pretty tower," she said. "It's going to be fun to look at it and it's going to be fun to see it way off in the distance once you're coming 20 westbound."
