An umbrella organization of Quebec university student unions is calling on the government to enact legislation that would ban sexual relationships between teachers and their students.
The 72,000 member Student Union of Quebec (UEQ) in a brief to Higher Education Minister Hélène David calling for an explicit ban and punishment in cases where there is a direct authority link between a teacher and a student.
David is currently leading government consultations on sexual violence on campus.
A spokesman for the Quebec Federation of University Professors tells the Journal de Montreal that the proposal is interesting but leaves many questions unanswered such as how investigations might be carried out and the type of punishment that might be administered.
The consultations which began last fall will conclude in March.
