A Quebec Superior Court judge has thrown out a court challenge that attempted to stop the Réseau électrique métropolitain (REM), electric train project.
The environmental lobby group, Montreal Climate Coalition and five citizens had sought an injunction which would have forced the project promoters the Caisse de Depot, and provincial and federal governments to hold additional environmental impact studies.
They had argued that the previous hearings were not presented with the full scope of the project.
Radio Canada reports that Judge Michel Yergeau rejected their application citing poor documentation, speculation and a lack of overall evidence to back their claim.
In the 48-page ruling the judge said he was stopping the application process now to avoid wasting valuable court resources for a claim that had no chance of succeeding.
